My Trip to France
This is a journal I kept for a period of two weeks the summer before sixth
grade while in France. It is part of a larger project to type my journals.
This notebook was written during a 1986 visit to France. I was 12 and
had just completed 5th grade. Our teacher gave journals to all
of the about 25 kids who went to France. We travelled through a program,
entitled The Association
of French-American Classes, Ltd wherein teachers and students travel to France.
This journal or caier
(pronounced Kai-Yay), represents two weeks of writing in a classroom setting
usually between the hours of 8am and 12pm. The dates appear in French. There are
1,050 words. There are an average of 14 words per sentence. The Flesch
reading ease rating is 80.7. There are no passive sentences and FlesKincaid
grade level is estimated at 5.5.
Though these grammatical statistics are
interesting when I retype and read old journals,
I am struck by two things: One how much of what I wrote I didn't remember
clearly, and two how much I remembered clearly that I didn't write.

Dear Kyay!
Well, I guess it sunk in. France. Wow! Look at this paper! My family has a
swimming pool that is ice cold I hope I can visit Bridget and Mari
Christine.
At recess I had fun. About one million kids crowded around me and Bridget.
I like (of the French kids) Marie-Christine, Nathalie, Virginie and
Elody.
All these people showed me the school. The bathrooms (so I heard) were holes
in the ground so Jim made up a high five clap. High five down low in the
toilet bowl you go Cool huh? Everyone is nice to me here are the groups

grabbed a bag from Rick Hoff he then stood in the middle of the aisle and
looked like he was going to blow up the bag then pop it wrong he started
drooling in it and then. Blaaaa. Out it came with flying colors.
